Airport and transportation painting · Monroe County

Airport and transportation building painting in the Florida Keys

Monroe County owns and operates two airports, Key West International and Florida Keys Marathon International, and both hold FAA Part 139 certification. Painting at an airport is a security and operations job first and a painting job second. We quote this work and describe here how such a job runs.

A small airport terminal and control tower beside a taxiway, with a few people walking on the apron under a blue sky.

Access comes before paint. Federal rules in 49 CFR Part 1542 decide who may enter secured areas: a fingerprint-based criminal history check, an airport ID that is displayed, or an escort. Badges and escorts come through the airport operator before any date is set, and the wait for them decides the start.

Work is planned around flight activity, not against it. Terminal interiors are painted at night in sections. Exteriors and airside buildings are scheduled with the operator, with equipment heights and vehicle routes cleared in advance. Hangars and service buildings carry their own rules, which we ask for early.

We do not list airport jobs we have done, and we do not claim any. Send what you know about the building, who operates it and when work may happen, and we will scope the painting around those limits.

Order of work

  1. Confirm the operator, the building and the security rules that apply.
  2. Apply for badges and arrange escorts through the operator.
  3. Agree work windows, staging areas and equipment routes.
  4. Prepare and prime in sections, with barriers and odor control.
  5. Apply finishes in the agreed windows and keep each area clear when released.
  6. Walk each area with the operator and close the punch list.

Where it goes wrong

What tends to go wrong, and how it is held in check

Badges that take time

The airport operator processes badges and sets escort rules. We request them as soon as the scope is agreed, and the schedule shows when each person can start.

Work that only fits the night

Terminal corridors and gate areas are painted in short shifts between operations, with barriers, signs and odor control agreed with the operator.

Equipment near flight paths

A lift or scaffold near the airside needs clearance. Heights, positions and hours are approved by the operator before equipment arrives.

The limits

Security requirements, escorts and flight-operation limits are set by the airport operator and federal rules, not by us. We quote only what the operator allows.

Questions

About airport and transportation painting

Do you paint at airports?

We quote airport and transportation building work. We do not claim past airport jobs. The quote follows the operator's access and security rules.

Who handles badges and escorts?

The airport operator sets and issues them under federal security rules. We request them early and build the start date from the answer.

What does a Keys commercial painting job cost?

There is no rate card. We build a quote either after walking the building or, when they show enough, from photos and drawings. It reflects the surfaces and how much repair they need, the coating system, how the crew reaches each wall, whether the place stays open, and what a delivery over US 1 involves. Two buildings that look alike seldom quote alike.

What size of painting job will you quote in the Keys?

Any size. A single storefront, one stairwell or a tenant suite is as welcome as a motel, a marina or a condominium. Tell us the building and the surfaces, and we scope the work as described.

Is Romco Builders licensed in Florida?

Yes. Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Fort Lauderdale. Ask for the license details when you request a quote.

How a job runs

Six steps, in this order

  1. Send the address and the surfaces

Phone us or use the quote form, with photos or drawings if you have them. Say what is to be painted, who is inside and which dates matter.

  2. We walk the building

We study the walls and their condition, how each side is reached, and what has to stay covered or out of the way.

  3. Written scope and quote

The quote spells out prep, coating system, how each wall is reached, the phasing, and each step that waits on an approval.

  4. Approvals and paperwork

Historic or color review, association or landlord sign-off, any permit the work triggers and airport or site clearances come first.

  5. Prep and coating

Washing, repair, primer and finish follow the agreed order, with people, boats and vehicles below kept clear.

  6. Punch list and handover

Together we go over the finished work, clear the punch list, and you keep the coating record for the building file.
